Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is supplied by large industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures must always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be located close to the charging area. The route to the post should not be blocked and an employee who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Do not permit objects like for instance matches or lighters to be utilized when an employee is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also needs to be properly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
